Many have argued that it is important to examine different aspects of commitment in romantic relationships, but few studies have done so. We examined dedication i. Cross-sectionally, these four facets of commitment were associated in expected directions with relationship adjustment, as well as perceived likelihood of relationship termination and of marriage. Longitudinally, each facet uniquely predicted relationship stability.
More dedication, more material and perceived constraints and less felt constraint were uniquely associated with a higher likelihood of staying together over an eight-month period. At the same time, little research has focused on determining which specific aspects of commitment are most predictive of relationship continuance versus termination. The purpose of the present study was to explore different facets of relationship commitment in unmarried relationships and how they related concurrently to other relationship characteristics as well as to relationship stability over time.
Specifically, we examined dedication i. Most modern views of commitment find their historical roots in interdependence theory or social exchange theories.

Full Length Research Paper. While developmental psychological literature considers the threat of HIV as a health risk in dating relationships, little if any research has examined the psychological strain that the threat of HIV places on dating couples. This study aimed at investigating HIV-related dating stress. The data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire from a sample of students at the University of Botswana aged 18 to 21 years. Most participants were worried about the possibility of contracting HIV through their dating relationships.
Length of dating and sexual intercourse did not result in significant differences in the experience of stress. The results suggest that learning how to deal with the threat of HIV in relationships without compromising interpersonal trust and sexual health becomes a developmental challenge. The results indicate that the threat of HIV creates a cognitive and emotional dilemma, which makes young people prone to engaging in denial to maintain trust in their relationships.
Knowledge about HIV-related dating stress and coping mechanisms can benefit psychological counselling and sexual health education for young people. This article is published under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 4.

In our first year of dating, we began a journal of our adventures. In it we raved of our love for each other, the first time meeting friends and family, nights spent at the bar, and everything in between. When we met, we had both been writing separate, non-committal blogs on livejournal. Two months into the relationship, we began our journal. We kept the journal online, password protected so that no one else could accidentally stumble upon our private posts. We have never told anyone about our journal, not even today.

This study examines the attitudes about intimate violence and compares the prevalence of abuse reported by married and dating participants, by type of abuse and sex of respondent. A sample of 3, participants, aged 15 to 67 years, filled in one attitudinal questionnaire and a self-report instrument on abuse perpetration and victimization. Attitudinal data revealed a general disapproval of violence use, with greater violence support among males and married participants.
When comparing violence in both relational contexts, we found that, in terms of perpetration, more dating partners reported physical abuse and severe forms of physical abuse than married partners. Suggestions for future research are discussed. Marital violence has been a widely studied topic since the seventies, whereas violence between dating partners has become the object of growing attention since Makepeace pioneer study in [ 1 ].
Since then, research on dating violence has increased steadily and considerably, assuming a prominent position in the relevant international scientific literature. Yet, studies that compare violence between dating and married couples are sparse in international research and inexistent in the Portuguese context. In the following literature review, we begin by showing how research in the area of marital and dating violence has increased; we then present and discuss the results of the few available studies comparing levels of violence across these two distinct relational contexts—marriage and dating; finally, we concentrate on investigations that analyze the relationships between attitudes and behaviors.
Empirical findings show quite high levels of violence within both types of relationships. As for the United States of America, researchers [ 4 ] found rates of lifetime prevalence ranging from With respect to dating violence, research has also produced a wide variation of results, suggesting prevalence rates of offenders or victims ranging from
